On The Rocks

What's your place in the grander scheme of things? How does everything in nature relate to each other? On The Rocks is a unique little short film which succeeds in making you both smile and think.

Like "Moonlin's Wish", it's a film full of music - but this time popular music. It takes place a very hot and dry summer day at a radio station somewhere in the American west, where a DJ plays hits and jingles mixed with occasional new breaks and interviews.

This morning, he talks to a scientist about our place in the universe, how it affects us and our planet, and how we affect our planet as well. They conclude it's a fine balance between give and take. A balance we unfortunately might have disturbed now.

- It ain't gonna rain today, the DJ reports. Please save on the water!

A sweating old man in the neighborhood already knows what he's talking about. While watering the plants in his garden, he runs out of  water. He doesn't even have enough for himself! All he has is his dear bottle of whisky. But wait... he has no ice!

The story unfolds from there. We won't tell you what happens, but it does have a happy ending. The old man gets his ice. And his garden gets to drink as well.

They were lucky this time. The universe and mother Earth is trying hard to keep the balance. They are our friends. But we cannot always count on it, and this little film gem address that topic from the lighter side. Once again, a film which both makes you smile and think.

The film was essentially Hans Starlife's "hobby project" while filming the more demanding Cosmosaga and Moonlin's Wish. And while he as usual was supported by his family crew, he played all the roles himself: the old man, the voice of the DJ, and the scientist.

Phew! He really needs that whisky now. On The Rocks.
